What Do These Terms Mean?

I’ll be breaking down what the words on the menu bar mean, so hopefully they will make more sense after I’m done.

Best Sellers: These are the most popular games in terms of my sales. While some titles here have great historic numbers, others have also overtaken by newer games. Chat with me to find out more!

New: These are new releases that have just arrived in the past quarter, and refresh from time to time.

Party: These are usually games with 3 main characteristics: 1) They usually accommodate 5 or more players, 2) They have easily digestible rules, and 3) They usually come with a large dose of luck and result in loud laughter (or equally grumpy groans).

Kids: These are games that are suitable for kids from ages 5-9, with mechanics ranging from dexterity on the lower end, to memory and deduction, to learning STEM concepts at the higher end. Cooperation mechanics feature very prominently as well.

Family: Games here tend to be an equal mix of luck and skill, so that kids and adults (or adults of different skill levels) can go toe to toe with one another. You’ll be hard pressed to find 1) controversial themes, and  2) cutthroat game mechanics that result in hurt feelings (see: Party), as the goal here is usually to provide a relaxing experience.

Narrative: Games with a heavy focus on story tend to promote thinking about the plot in various way, either though player agency (in Arkham Horror The Card Game), segmentation and inference (in Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective), visual cues (in MicroMacro Crime City), gradual discovery (in Light in the Mist), to letting game mechanics alone create an unforgettable storyline (in Nemesis).

Strategy: The games here are often thinky ones with low or no luck, over an hour of play time, and possibly voluminous rules (and accompany teach). You often find “engine-building” mechanics here, where you come away from the game with a sense of satisfaction having created much more than you began the game with.

Accessories: You’ll find card sleeves, deck boxes for cards, metal coins, and other items to either protect or bling out your games here.

Offers: These are games that have been offered on deep discount to clear space for new ones to take their place.

Game Finder: Over here you’ll be able to click on your game type, desired player count, and level of rules complexity to hopefully find a game that suits you! Or you can also chat with me as well?
