Description

NB: Winner of the 2011 Complex Game of the Year Award (“Kennerspiel des Jahres”).

Take control of one of the great cities of the ancient world. Gather resources, develop commercial routes and affirm your military supremacy. Build your city and erect an architectural wonder which will transcend future times!

7 Wonders, one of the most acclaimed board games ever, returns with a gorgeous new edition.

WHAT’S NEW?

– Visual redesign of the game

– The rules have been entirely revised to make them more easily accessible to new players.

– The player aid has been fully redesigned.

– Improved card layout, which allows for information to be more easily read. The guild cards, spread out over the many 7 Wonders expansions, have been consolidated and added to the new base game.

– The Wonders have been made bigger and more prominent, and their A and B sides have been replaced by a day side – and a night side for a more flavourful experience. Both the base game and the expansions are also moving to larger, standard-sized boxes.

– Thanks to symbols discreetly inserted in the contents of the game, 7 Wonders and its expansions are now adapted for colourblind players.

Observations

– No more counterfeits with the gold foiled box and cards in the new edition

– Rules for teaching the game and increased ease of gameplay due to new rulebook and redesigned layout of cards

– Even with the new improves, increase of the recommended retail price by USD10 seems excessive

– Removal of excellent 2 player rules from the original game is a big loss

– Gameplay remains highly tactical and localised on the actions of your immediate neighbours, which can lead to inadvertent cooperative help or hate drafting

– Enjoyment hinges on choosing cards based on your memory of cards given away and guesswork of other players likely card choice

– Long term replayability depends on purchase of expansions to add additional gameplay mechanisms and card variety

Alternatives

– Sushi Go Party, a 20 minute easy to teach version of 7 Wonders

– It’s a Wonderful World, a longer 60 minute game that plays like 7 Wonders combined with Splendor

– Azul or Azul Summer Pavilion, 2-4 player drafting games that feature less luck

– 7 Wonders Duel, Hanamikoji, and Mandala, all 2 player games that feature good drafting
