One Night Ultimate Werewolf is a 5-10 minute party game for 3-15 players where players take on roles in either the villager or the werewolf camp, then close their eyes. Each role then is called out in turn, with player(s) opening their eyes when they are called upon to perform their role action, such as looking at other cards or swopping them, before closing their eyes again. When all roles in play are done, players all open eyes. As the werewolf team know who one another is, the villager team has 4-10 minutes to figure out who the werewolves are and vote on a player to kill as the werewolf when the timer expires. The werewolves win if no werewolves are killed by majority vote when time is up.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf plays like werewolves are the protagonists rather than the antagonists. Having intelligently infiltrated the villager community, they use their knowledge to toy with the villagers who, even with the powerful seer, remain a bunch of bumbling fools unable to tell friend from foe. That the villagers have come to a consensus to terminate one of their own at the end of the night is only irrefutable proof of their idiocy and fear.

The best part of One Night Ultimate Werewolf has to come the devious confusion of stating you are a werewolf up front, the mad relief after robbing a werewolf and surviving, or the instant confession of original werewolfness after learning your role was swopped with a villager player.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf can fall flat for new players as the game does not provide any rules for the gradual dissemination of necessary information even as the timer runs out. If no villager players get nervous and start to share accurate information, or when there are no werewolves present, the game can petter out with its main saving grace being that only 5 minutes of everyone’s life was wasted.

While The Resistance Avalon remains the main competition for One Night Ultimate Werewolf, other social deduction games such as Secret Hitler or Dark Moon are good longer alternatives as well. Other excellent social deduction games that play over 10 players include Two Rooms and a Boom and Deception Murder in Hong Kong. Of the expansions available, Daybreak adds roles to help the werewolves, Vampire adds unnecessary complexity, and Alien introduces a high dose of randomness.
